All the students thrived - the "teachers" and the "learners"." It was certainly a "beautiful adventure" for all those involved. Kudos to all involved in this enriching experience! |
PLTW Activities
The 8th grade students designed a pull toy using at least two different mechanisms that had secondary action that happened by the turning of the axles. This pull toy had to survive the Pull Toy Parade around the school. Each pull toy had to have a theme that could be seen through illustrations.
The 7th grade students had to create a customized toy for students to use during occupational therapy. These toys were brainstormed, sketched, digitalized in CAD software and proto-typed. Toys had to be kids friendly and serve as aid to help students with cerebral palsy get their therapy.

Book Fair
Every year, approximately 75,000 schools across the country host Scholastic Book Fairs. Staffers work with parents, teachers, librarians, media specialists, and principals to connect kids to high-quality books with school-based sales. While one of the benefits to holding a Book Fair is that the school receives a percentage of the sales, it also unites students with literature. |
NHD Excursions
Mr. Farmer accompanied several students to Meadowcroft Rockshelter, an archeological site located in Avella, PA, overlooking Cross Creek. They met with Dr. James Adovasio, lead archeologist, who is one of the foremost experts in perishable artifacts. Their journey also took them to meet with Professor Rob Ruck, a Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh, who spoke with them about the Negro Leagues in Pittsburgh, the 1971 Pirates, and baseball Hall of Famer Andrew "Rube" Foster. |
The NFPA Fluid Power Action Challenge is a competition that challenges middle school students to solve an engineering problem using fluid power. Students work in teams to design and build a fluid power machine, and then compete with other teams in a timed competition! The Challenge gives kids experience in hands-on learning, teamwork, problem-solving and perseverance. It introduces them to careers in the fluid power industry and creates an environment where failing is ok, because it’s the best way to learn and succeed. http://nfpahub.com/fpc/action-challenge/
Mr. Kerekes is leading a group of 8th graders through the program. They have about 8 weeks to design and complete their projects. On December 6, the competition (hosted by Penn State, Fayette Campus) will determine the winning team!

Cal U AWE Experience
Students from Mrs. Frow's 8A class participated in the AWE Experience at Cal U on September 28. The AWE Experience is a day for students to discover new learning in the fields of art and composition. Students select categories of interest such as journalism, photography, short story, mural, designing comic books, etc. They then are placed in small groups and paired with either a professor or professional in that field. They take two classes that day - one art and one writing. From there, students get to check out the Scholastic Art and Writing website so as to contemplate the types of entries they will submit. |
